How to recognize internet scams and protect yourself online
In today’s digital age, the internet offers many advantages and opportunities. However, along with these benefits comes the risk of online scams, which can lead to financial loss or the theft of personal data. Below, we highlight key warning signs that can help you recognize online fraud, along with practical tips on how to protect yourself.
1) Watch out for unusual offers
If an offer seems “too good to be true,” it usually is. Extremely low prices and unrealistic promises may look attractive, but be cautious when shopping online. Warning signs include an unprofessional-looking store, reviews that are overwhelmingly positive with no realistic feedback, and requests for upfront payment without secure payment options. Before making a purchase, check the store’s reputation and, whenever possible, use well-known and trusted platforms.
2) Verify the website
Before taking any action on a website, verify its credibility. Look for clear contact details, basic company information (company name, address, and registration details if available), purchase terms, and any external proofs of trust (e.g., certificates) or reliable reviews.
3) Pay attention to spelling and writing style
Most reputable organizations and companies invest effort in correct spelling and grammar on their websites and in email communication. Text filled with frequent mistakes, odd phrasing, or “machine-translated” sentences can be a sign you are dealing with scammers.
4) Check the online store or company
Verify the company’s identity through search engines and social media. Look for customer experiences, negative comments, or warnings. If you can find almost no information about the company, or if multiple warnings appear—proceed with caution.
5) Read the sales, delivery, and return terms
Most reputable sellers clearly publish their return policy, delivery terms, and complaint procedures. If return terms are not stated, ask the seller in advance what happens if you are not satisfied with the product. The more information you have about the product and the seller, the lower the chance of something going wrong. If buying from a private individual, make sure you agree on return options upfront.
6) Never share personal information
Never share personal information, such as your credit card number, via email or on unverified websites. Use secure payment methods and, whenever possible, additional protection measures (e.g., 2FA, virtual cards, or trusted payment providers).
